Poker Sit and Go Report – Early Play Should be Passive, Not Tight

May 4, 2007

So many sit and go poker “teachers” have always said to be really tight during the first. I remember even once reading one of Roy Rounder’s recommendations that you should only be playing AA, KK or QQ for the first stages of the game and when you get those hands as hole cards be very, very aggressive – even all in!

Can I tell you something right now? That is utter nonsense. Everybody is on to that lame strategy that never really worked in the first place, and is even more lame now than it was 2 years ago, when I remember reading it. The simple truth is that everyone either plays that strategy or recognizes the schmuck who is using it. How can you get ahead that way? There is no winning, when playing open book poker. The best you can hope for are mediocre gains swallowed up by long losing streaks waiting for quality cards.

The other side of that debate is to play aggressive in the early going. If you have seen my sit and go training videos you surely know that isn’t what I recommend either, as it will usually result in you being an honored member of the rail in short order. So how do you balance this out so that you actually win more than you lose?

The answer is simply this. You need to see more flops in the early going for as cheap as possible, so as not to risk your tournament if the flop misses you. This strategy involves several dynamics as well which you need to absolutely master.

Playing your position. This is about the most important aspect of your game while learning, that will rapidly improve your results once you understand it. Getting in cheap usually means limping in the cut-off, button, and small blind positions, while calling a minimum raise in the big blind. You do this with hands that have potential for big pots. AX suited, KX suited, connectors, single gapped suited connectors, and any pair will qualify here.

Knowing your opponents. I keep harping here about qualifying your opponent’s style using holdem indicator, but this will win you pots without cards when the time is needed.

Playing after the flop. This also involves knowing your opponents but you need to understand flop texture and betting strategies at this stage, otherwise you may get pushed out of a lot pots where you were the clear favorite.

Pot Odds and Draws. The combined knowledge of this math will really help your decision making skills as to continue in a hand or not. Keep in mind that when drawing in the early stages, that flop had better hit you real good, and the pot odds should be absolutely juicy.

The Power to Lay Down a Hand. If you are getting into these pots and find that you are consistently asking yourself how you can continue in the hand facing yet another bet, then you are actually better off playing that lame book tight strategy. This takes a certain internal strength that comes from your character set, as opposed to pure poker skills.

In closing, see as many flops as you can while keeping your stack exposure to the minimum.

Ensure You Know the Unwritten Rules of Texas Hold’em Poker

May 4, 2007

It doesn’t matter whether you play Texas Hold’em poker online or at an actual casino, the more you practice, the better your game.

Knowing these “unwritten” Texas Hold’em poker rules doesn’t hurt either so read on!

Patience takes practice

Too many Texas Hold’em poker players mistakenly think that winning really big – just once – is the way to go. But that’s not at all true. In fact if you play this way you’re practically guaranteed to go home a big loser. The best players know that the secret to winning is to play slowly and steadily. They’re not afraid to sit out a hand or to fold when the pot odds aren’t in their favor.

Learn to refocus

Again, too many Texas Hold’em poker players go into the game believing it’s their duty to play aggressively in an attempt to knock other players out of the game. If you think like this then you need to stop. Plenty of players will make stupid mistakes and knock themselves out without your help. If you let them fall on their own all you’ll need to focus on are the players who are left.

Learn the risks worth taking

The term “playing loose” refers to players who make bets they definitely shouldn’t be making. This behavior is extremely risky especially when betting on hands that are nearly impossible to win. And it’s another sure-fire way to go home a loser. You’ll have to take risks from time to time when playing Texas Hold’em poker. But you want to be sure that what you’re risking is proportional to your chances of winning. This is what’s meant by taking calculated risks. And yes, it does involve knowing how to calculate pot odds and the odds that the card you need will come up.

Don’t become vulnerable

If you allow it, don’t be surprised when other Texas Hold’em players start setting traps that they know you’ll fall into. Even though setting traps is a tactic used mostly by experienced players, any player can do it. All another player needs to unleash this potentially devastating tactic is the ability to identify a vulnerable player. Oftentimes players may not even realize they’re showing vulnerability. Take the player who goes into the game knowing he will fold when he gets raised. Realizing that this player has a pattern of folding under pressure, it won’t take long before other players start laying traps designed to take the vulnerable player’s money. A better tactic for that player would be to immediately check or to fold instead of waiting.

Leave your “scared money” at home

Texas Hold’em poker and any casino game for that matter shouldn’t be played by people who can’t afford to raise the stakes as high as they need to go for a chance to win big. Better known as “playing with scared money,” those who play Texas Hold’em with it frequently lose pots that rightfully should be theirs because they allow themselves be bluffed by other players. Don’t make this mistake! Play only with money you can afford to lose.

Learn 5 Texas Holdem Betting Strategies You Can Use To Instantly Improve Your Texas Holdem Poker

May 4, 2007

In texas holdem a bet says you have a good hand and when you raise, you say with confidence that you have the best hand and you’re willing to back that up with your stack. If yo have a bad hand, you fold. Of course, almost no one sticks to that philosophy in texas holdem poker, which is what makes holdem not only a game of skill, but interesting and a lot of fun to play. It’s a study in human nature.

Here are five texas holdem betting strategies you can use to improve your texas holdem poker play.

Stealing the Blinds: If you’re playing late position with only the blinds left, you can raise the blinds. If they don’t have a hand, they will most likely fold instead of paying to see the flop. All you get is the blinds, but you’ve added to your stack.

Steal-Raise: All players have checked to you so you raise. This could limit the number of active players by getting them to fold, or even allow you to take the pot. You may not want to use this betting strategy unless you got something on the flop.

Check-Raising: This is also known as trapping. When you have a good hand, you check to your opponent instead of raising. In texas holdem, you do this with the intent of trapping them into betting so that you can come back over the top with a raise.

Raise at the Open: Raising in early position is an aggressive move to limit the players in the hand. You can use this to help you later as well by getting a read on what the other players will do when you come out aggressively. Anyone who stays in the hand will be aggressive players or they really do have a solid hand.

Squeezing: You squeeze when you think someone is on a flush or straight draw but doesn’t have it. Raising in this situation may keep the player from staying in the hand, not wanting to risk his stack on the possibility of hitting his straight or flush. Keep in mind, unless you already have a strong hand, this type of texas holdem betting strategy could really backfire against an aggressive player.

Try implementing these five texas holdem betting strategies and watch your texas holdem game start to improve.

Gambling Laws In Oklahoma

May 4, 2007

Throughout the state of Oklahoma, you’ll find many casinos and bingo halls run by various Indian tribes. While these operations fully comply with the law of the land, you might be surprised to know that there are also a whole host of illegal operators out there who attempt to skirt around the law. For this reason, the state of Oklahoma has a wide array of laws and statutes on the books.

Some of these affect the casual player, while most are in place to help protect the public from con artists and other illegal operations. If you’re thinking of visiting Oklahoma on a gambling trip (to somewhere like, say, Hominy, Chickasha, El Reno, or Pocola) then you might find it interesting to read up on a few of these laws.

Statute 21-944 – Slot Machines – Misdemeanor – Any person who sets up or operates a slot machine in his or her place of business will be guilty of a misdemeanor. Upon conviction, they shall face a fine of not less than $25 and not more that $100, or a term of imprisonment in the county jail for not more than 30 days (or both a fine and imprisonment).

Statute 21-945 – Buildings – Use for Gambling – Felony – It is illegal for the owner of any building or piece of real estate to knowingly permit gambling to take place on the premises. Doing so will lead to a fine of not less than $100 and not more than $1000. Every day that illegal operations go on counts as a separate offense, so what seems to be a fairly mild penalty can quickly add up. If the offender cannot pay the fine, the offending property will be seized.

Statute 21-946 – Illegal Use of Building – Nuisance – Felony – Any home or room where illegal gambling takes place is guilty of a felony. The owner of the house or room, along with anyone who helps operate it, will be considered guilty of a felony and fined no less than $500 and no more than $10,000. Another option is imprisonment in the State Penitentiary for a term not less than 1 year and not more than 10 years.

Statute 21-954 – Three Card Monte, Swindle or Confidence Games – Felony – Any person who deals, plays, or practices the swindle known as the three-card monte, and any other swindle or confidence game, shall be found guilt of a felony and punished by a fine of not less than $1000 and not more than $5000, or by confinement in the State Penitentiary for a term of not less than 1 year and not more than 5 years.

Statute 21-969 – Sale or Possession of Slot Machines or Punch Boards – Misdemeanor – It is unlawful for anyone to have in their possession any slot machine or punch board, or to sell or lease such items. The only exceptions are for slot machines older than 25 years or slot machines used for the purposes of teaching slot machine repair. Persons in violation will be found guilty of a misdemeanor and fined not less than $50 and not more than $150, or imprisoned in the county jail for not more than 60 days (or both).

Statute 21-971 – Operating Punch Boards – Misdemeanor – Any person who sets up or operates a punch board (unless covered by the Charity Gaming Act) will be guilty of a misdemeanor and punished by a fine of not less than $50 and not more than $100, or by imprisonment in a county jail for not more than 30 days (or both).

Statute 21-987 – Dissemination of Gambling Information – Felony – Gambling information is defined as transmitting or receiving information used in making or settling bets. This does not apply to licensed radio or television stations or newspapers who are reporting the odds of a legally staged sporting event. Any person found guilty of disseminating such information will be guilty of a felony and be punished by imprisonment of not more than 5 years, or a fine of not more than $25,000 (or both).

Luckily, the average citizen should never be in danger of violating any of these laws. Still, it’s an interesting look into the legal system of the state of Oklahoma. Just stay away from illegal slot parlors set up in trailer parks and you should be just fine.

Best Places to Gamble in Oklahoma

May 4, 2007

If you’re looking for places to gamble in Oklahoma, you may find yourself overwhelmed with choices. Casinos and bingo halls literally dot the landscape, and it’s often difficult to know which towns or cities offer the best facilities. Who offers the biggest payouts? Where is the bingo competition the fiercest? Who has the most table games?

As I’ve traveled all over the state looking to strike it rich, I have encountered the same problems. That’s why I started making notes during my trips in order to compile a list of some of the best locations to gamble in Oklahoma.

While there are plenty of other fine gambling destinations in the state, the towns and cities mentioned below offer excellent casinos and a dose of much-welcome hospitality. Feel free to explore the state at your own leisure, but rest assured that you can’t go wrong with these choices.

Clinton, Oklahoma – Sitting smack dab in the middle of historic Route 66, Clinton is known for several things. First, it’s home to the Oklahoma version of the Route 66 Museum. Second, their high school football team, The Red Tornadoes, have won an impressive 14 state championships. In addition, this city of nearly 9,000 is the birthplace of country superstar Toby Keith.

If you’re in the mood for bingo, Clinton offers two facilities to keep you satisfied. The first is the Cheyenne & Arapaho Social Service, and the second facility is the Cheyenne & Arapaho Adult EDU (both are located on Route 66). Each location serves another purpose during the day, but nightfall finds them packed full of eager bingo players.

If casino games are your thing, then head on over to the Lucky Star Casino on 101 North Indian Hospital Road. They have around 250 slot and video poker machines, and you can gamble till your heart’s content in a spacious 13,000 square foot environment.

Shawnee, Oklahoma – Besides being the birthplace of Brad Pitt, this city of almost 29,000 is also the home of the very first Sonic Drive-In franchise. And if you happen to visit in September, you might notice a large number of Japanese youngsters about. This is due to an annual exchange program with their sister city of Akita, Japan (Shawnee junior-high students visit Japan in July).

And if it’s gambling that you’re looking for, you don’t need to travel any further than the Fire Lake Casino (located at 41207 Hardesty Road in Shawnee). They’re open 24 hours a day, and have 50,000 square feet of gaming available. A race book is offered, as well as 700 slot machines and a 650 seat bingo hall. There’s also an entertainment center to help you get your country music fix.

Tulsa, Oklahoma – With nearly 400,000 residents, Tulsa is the second-largest city in Oklahoma. Located in the lush “Green Country” of Northeastern Oklahoma, this city is considered the cultural and arts center of Oklahoma (with opera, ballet companies, and numerous art museums). In 2005, it was selected as one of “America’s Most Livable Large Cities.”

There are a number of Indian gaming venues available in Tulsa. The largest casinos are Osage Million Dollar Elm, Creek Nation Casino, and Cherokee Casino and Resort. If you like horse racing, you can bet on the ponies at Fair Meadows and Will Rogers Downs. And if bingo is more your thing, then check out one of the following: Integrity Gaming, Intertribal Indian Club, Sheridan Village Bingo, South Memorial Sertoma Club, Travelers Bingo, and Super T Bingo.

Wyandotte, Oklahoma – Located in far Northeastern Oklahoma in Ottawa County, Wyandotte is a small town of around 363 residents. Besides being a very friendly community, it is also home to the tribal headquarters of the Wyandotte Nation.

In addition, several casinos and bingo halls are located in this small town. The Lucky Turtle Casino features 80 slot and video poker machines. Border Town Bingo and Casino offers 500 slot and video poker machines, as well as 650 seats for bingo. Eastern Shawnee Tribal Bingo specializes in the game that we all know and love, and the Eastern Shawnee Travel Plaza offers slots, video poker, and a race book.

Oklahoma is a beautiful state with lots of natural history and sights to see. The fact that you have a chance to win a little money while you’re looking around makes it even better. If you’ve never been to “America’s Frontier Lake State” before, I would highly recommend that you make the trip. And while you’re at it, drop in on the towns and cities mentioned above. I’m sure that they’ll be glad to see you.

Texas Holdem Online A Different Game Altogether

May 4, 2007

If you are a card room vet and you decide to play Texam Holdem online you will notice some interesting differences. Gone are the face to face showdowns and long drawn out hands. Texas holdem online is a quick paced and anonymous experience. If you play texas holdem online you will notice many erratic bettors and be prepared for some shoot outs as well.

Traditionalists may shy away from texas holdem online, however, if they are skilled players this may not be a wise decision. With the internet making poker available to millions of people, there are plenty of inexperienced ‘fish’ to catch. Playing texas holdem online differs in the fact that players must adjust how they read each other. With limited time to act in the hand, players often manipulate the small amount of time they have to bluff or conceal their hand. There are also those playing texas holdem online who are not aware that they are doing so.

Texas holdem online betting strategy also differs from the live table experience. Since players are not seated face to face texas holdem online is a much looser game. Because there is a relatively high level of anonymity while playing poker online, players tend to go all in or take chances because no matter what the result, they can hide their emotions for their opponents. Texas holdem online shelters inexperienced players from embarrassment.

High stakes players can make a bundle of money in short time. The rapid pace of texas holdem online (at least compared to a live game) means that money and cards exchange hands often. Playing texas holdem online at a high stakes no limit table can take 30 minutes to empty a player’s account sometimes even less time is required to double up. Inevitably however, there are technological constraints that sometimes stymie the pace. Slow internet connections or new users not familiar with the software sometimes hinder the rhythm at a particular table. With increase in knowledge and more users updating their access to the internet, interruptions are less frequent than at the advent of texas holdem online.

When all is said and done however, texas holdem online is a game worth playing, at least once. There are definitely fewer hassles when playing texas holdem online as compared to live games a the casinos. No doubt texas holdem online is a different game, but, in many ways it is more enjoyable.

Imagine knowing the exact poker system you can use over and over again to have that killer advantage over your online opponents and make thousands of dollars every night! Imagine starting with a $20 bankroll and doubling, tripling and quadrupling it into thousands of dollars. Average Jo Turned Poker Pro earns $1,200 Daily. Facts About Gambling in Oklahoma

May 4, 2007

In 1987, the Supreme Court ruled in California vs. Cabazon Band of Mission Indians that tribal governments had the rights to establish gaming operations independent of state regulation. The very next year, Congress passed the Indian Gaming Regulatory Act, which worked towards developing a manageable framework for Indian Gaming.

While authority over Class II gaming was left to the tribes, Class III gaming required a compact between the tribe and the state. In Oklahoma, the Indian tribes regulate both Class II and Class III, although they are still subject to the provisions set out in the IGRA.

So what’s the difference between Class II and Class III? Class II games are generally defined as bingo, lotto, pull tab, and punch board games. Class III includes electronic bingo games, non-house banked card games, and electronic amusement games.

This legal decision was very important and had an immediate impact on the Indian tribes throughout the Unites States. One of the states where it made the biggest impact was in Oklahoma. From Bristow to Stringtown, Lone Grove to Seminole, tribal leaders began developing strategies to make use of this ruling for the betterment of their people.

Under this federal law, gambling can only be conducted on “Indian Land.” According to federal law, “Indian Land” is defined as:

a. Land which is a part of a federally-recognized Indian reservation, or
b. Not located on a reservation, but held in trust by the federal government for an Indian tribe.

In Oklahoma, these gaming compacts are in effect until their date on January 1st, 2020. If, however, the tribes and state both agreed to do so, the compact could be terminated at any time before then.

As for the proceeds collected from these gambling operations, the IGRA requires the net revenues to be used for the following purposes:

a. To help fund operations of local government agencies.
b. To donate to charitable organizations.
c. To promote economic development within the tribe.
d. To provide for the welfare of the Indian tribe and its members.
e. To fund tribal government operations.

The tribe can also distribute net revenue to members of the tribe in the form of a per capita payment. To do so, the tribe must have a RAP (Revenue Allocation Plan), which must be approved by the Secretary of the Interior.

According to the Federal Register, the following 32 tribes have entered into gaming compacts with the State of Oklahoma: Absentee Shawnee Tribe, Apache Tribe, Caddo Nation of Oklahoma, Citizen Potawatomi Nation, Cherokee Nation of Oklahoma, Cheyenne-Arapaho Tribes, Chickasaw Nation, Choctaw Nation, Comanche Nation, Delaware Nation, Eastern Shawnee Tribe, Iowa Tribe of Oklahoma, Kaw Nation of Oklahoma, Kickapoo Tribe of Oklahoma, Kiowa Tribe of Oklahoma, Miami Nation, Modoc Tribe of Oklahoma, Muscogee (Creek) Nation, Osage Nation, Otoe-Missouria Tribe, Ottawa Tribe, Pawnee Nation of Oklahoma, Peoria Tribe of Oklahoma, Ponca Tribe of Oklahoma, Quapaw Tribe of Oklahoma, Sac & Fox Nation, Seminole Nation, Seneca-Cayuga Tribes of Oklahoma, Thlopthlocco Tribal Town, Tonkawa Tribe, Wichita and Affiliated Tribes, and the Wyandotte Nation.

History of iGaming – Knowledge for Getting an Online Gambling Jobs

May 4, 2007

If you are interested in getting an online gambling job it’s important to understand the history of the industry.

In 1994 one of the first software development companies Microgaming was established following the Free Trade and Processing Zone Act in Antigua. The head start was useful & Microgaming gained a real competitive advantage in the technology behind online betting & casinos. However it took 2 years before Intercasino launched the first internet casino which could accept real money wagers in October of 1996.

It wasn’t long before the burgeoning business came under the scrutiny of the authorities in America when Jon Kyl attempted to introduce the Internet Gambling Prohibition Act which planned to make it illegal for any company to offer online gambling to any US citizen. However the bill failed to make it through congress but gave a glimpse of the industries strained relationship with the US authorities.

By 1999 there were already up to 700 online casinos offering online betting opportunities impressive given the slow uptake of the internet amongst the general public. It was also around this point the introduction of more sophisticated software from Boss Media allowed for multiplayer games with the ability for users to chat to each other. This new technology had a huge impact on the industry & really helped create an involving & social environment to gamble.

The following year was hugely significant as Cryptologic are listed on the NASDAQ exchange. The company who provided encrypted electronic payment technology were proving a success with both customers & investors. Also having plenty of success was a winner on The Sands of the Caribbean online casino won $400k at the date the largest online casino payout.

But by 2002 that had already seemed like a small win with a number of winners taking home more than a million dollars in online casino winnings. Inevitably these wins drew even more of attention from the US government who began creating a series of laws which would all but outlaw online gambling with a bill that prevented online gambling.

This gives you a basic introduction to some of the historical background to online gambling industry, the perfect foundation if you are looking to get an igaming job.

How to Increase Your Poker Profits by Using Your Texas Holdem Poker Face

May 4, 2007

With so much talk about how fun and easy it is to play Texas Holdem poker online, maybe you’re wondering if one environment is better than the other.

Well the truth is, both types of Texas Holdem (online and offline) are a lot of fun!

The big difference of course is that with online Texas Holdem you do play against other poker players, but at the online table these players are represented by icons. Although the icons might have happy faces or smiley faces, what they don’t have are poker faces!

Is there really such a thing as a poker face?

You better believe there is and if you don’t know how to read one or worse, to display one, then you better stay away from Texas Holdem poker until you do!

If you know anything about body language, you know that your body can speak much louder than your words. And when it comes playing texas hold em poker, although your mouth may be quiet, your face including your eyes, eyebrows, forehead, chin, and mouth and even your breathing could give away your hand!

Even if these body parts aren’t necessarily giving away your hand, the inability to manage your Texas Holdem poker face might be telling other players what you’re thinking about!

When you play Texas Holdem live, as in you’re playing in the physical presence of others, the experienced poker players will spend a lot of time interpreting the poker faces of the other players. Oftentimes these practiced players are able to tell whether another player is telling the truth and really is holding a royal flush in his hands or whether he is bluffing. Not coincidentally this is called looking for another player’s “tells.”

Poker face tips

Here are some tips that can help you keep your “poker face” from telling what’s in your hand when playing live Texas Holdem.

1. Whenever possible, refrain from making eye contact with the other players at your table. Better known as the “windows to your soul” your eyes can also tell others a lot about the cards you’re holding.

2. Never smile or frown. If you smile, you’re telling others you’re satisfied with your hand. If you frown, well you can figure out that one! Remember, other players at the texas hold em table are always watching.

3. Believe it or not the way your Adam’s apple reacts can give your texas hold em hand away. When you take a big gulp, it will make a noticeable movement, so try not to.

4. Keep your forehead from crinkling and your eyebrows from furrowing or arching. Otherwise, you may as well be advertising to the other texas hold em players that you’ve got a great hand or a terrible one.

5. As silly as this may sound, don’t forget to practice your poker face before sitting down at a Texas Holdem poker table. You can do this in front of your bathroom mirror or in front of your video camera – just as long as you don’t practice in front of experienced high stakes Texas Holdem players!

Help Save Online Texas Holdem Poker

May 4, 2007

If you play texas hold’em or any version of poker for that matter, you probably know by now the middle of the night BS that the US Government pulled to try and shut down online texas hold’em poker.

The legislation, “Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act”, is intended to stop US citizens from gambling on the internet. It doesn’t go after the players but prohibits payments from bankd and credit-card companies to off-shore Internet casinos that would be illegal under U.S. law.

The US government can yell and scream about these off-shore texas holdem and other gambling sites being illegal but they have no jurisdiction whatsoever when it comes to policing them. US laws just don’t apply. So the US government is trying to get it’s own banks to do the dirty work to stop you from playing texas holdem online. Sure, there are drug dealers and murderers running lose, but clearly you playing texas holdem online, that’s the real danger to the ordinary citizen.

PartyPoker, the largest online texas holdem poker site around, has already abandoned the US market because of this new legislation. So has Paradise Poker, another of the largest online texas holdem sites. This has displaced millions of American poker players, most of whom will just give up playing because it’s become too difficult. It looks like the 2007 World Series of Poker will have fewer poker players than the previous year for the first time since online texas holdem poker began.

I believe this new law is unjust and, ultimately, unenforceable. But it is currently making things very difficult, both for the poker sites and the ordinary online texas holdem poker player.
